Petra – Tour Guide Horses

  • Riding and training horses for over 20 years
  • Curious about communication and connection across species
  • Excited to explore and share experiences with people, animals and nature

Hey,
I’m Petra and together with Adrian I am following a lifelong dream of working with horses and nature.

I am originally from South Africa but came to Sweden with my family when I was still young, in the early 2000s. In Sweden, at first the society and the people were very different but I found I could easily connect to the nature and this was the place where I felt most at home. That feeling has followed me through life and I have always been able to find my feet out in the forest.

The other thing that happened when we moved to Sweden was that I was given riding lessons as a present – and as a way for me to make new friends. Well, I did make new friends, in particular with the horses. So these two entities, the forest and the horses, have stayed with me and supported me since I was young.

The deep connection I felt with the horses led me to study BSc Animal Behaviour at the University of Exeter and then MS Animal Science at the Swedish University of Agriculture in combination with Equine Science at the University of Edinburgh.  This academic background has left me with a greater understanding of horse training and learning theory but I also found that I did not want to spend my days behind a computer screen.

Life seems to have its own designs sometimes and when Adrian and I came together we were able to create a whole new way of living on our farm. Here we can live with both the forest and our animals right outside the front door.

A teaching from the horses is that life is meant to be experienced and experiences are meant to be shared. Following this brought forth the wish in me to invite others to come and explore the Swedish nature together with me and the small herd of horses living here.

Adrian – Tour Guide Sled Dogs

  • Tour guide since 2020
  • Driven by the love for Swedish nature and our strong-willed dogs.
  • Enjoys showing people our way of life as mushers and the vast snowy landscapes.

Hey,
I’m Adrian. I was born in the early 90s in Bad Honnef (Germany) and grew up there. I spent part of my elementary school years with my family in Stockholm, where I discovered my love for Swedish nature and culture.

I then attended high school again in Germany. After my graduation, I spent a year in Australia. There, I mainly learned how to live independently. I also realized that a “normal” 9-to-5 job would probably not make me happy in the long term. Nevertheless, I trained as a finance clerk. The work suited me, but I didn’t really enjoy it. Somewhat ambiguously, I dreamed of moving back to Sweden, but I had no concrete plan to do so.

That changed in 2017 when I took a trip to Sweden to drive sled dogs. I loved the people, the dogs, the shared work, and the way of life.

To learn a more practical skill, I then trained as a gardener and landscaper. I spent all my annual vacation during the next three years working with dogs in Sweden. By 2020, all the preparations were made to move to Sweden. I had converted a small bus, cleared out my apartment, and packed my cat.

In Sweden, I learned how to work and live successfully with Greenland dogs from Hendrik Stachnau and Dominik Winkler. I learned to feed and train them. Since then, I have guided winter tours with sled dogs and taken care of them year-round.

In the winter of 2022, I competed in my first sled dog race, the “Polar Distans”, over 175 km. I finished as second, just behind Dominik. This qualified me, among other things, for the Beaver Trap Trail race of 350 km – Sweden’s toughest long-distance sled dog race. I competed in this race in March 2023. Unlike the Polar Distans, the Beaver Trap Trail 350 is designed for the faster Alaskan Huskies, and I didn’t have a class of my own to race in. I became the first person ever to finish the race with only purebred dogs. I competed with eight Greenland dogs and one Alaskan Malamute.

Since 2024, I’ve been running my own farm, Thrymheim, together with my partner Petra. What connects us is not only our love for each other but also our love for Swedish nature, our animals, and the joy of bringing both closer to people.

Camp Trymheim

Thrymheim: In Norse mythology, this was the home of Skadi, the goddess of hunting and winter, and presumably the namesake of Scandinavia. Now, Thrymheim is our home – and we warmly invite you to experience it with us.

At Camp Thrymheim, we offer you a variety of ways to explore Sweden in a unique and special way. Our main house provides three comfortable double beds, divided into three separate rooms. While the spacious kitchen invites you to cook together, the cozy living room, the nature-inspired garden, and the bathroom with a rainfall shower offer perfect relaxation in every season.

We welcome our tour guests to a separate tour house on our property. Equipped with a small kitchen, sanitary facilities, and a cozy bedroom with bunk beds and a fireplace, it provides the perfect space to share experiences in the evenings.

In addition to our rental equipment, our workshops also offer, upon request, the possibility to maintain vehicles (cars, motorcycles, bicycles, boats, etc.) and gear.

From Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport (ARN), you can book a flight to Sveg. From Sveg, you can arrange a pick-up with us. (500 sek per person/ 2way)

Unforgettable adventures in the heart of Sweden

Read, what our guests had to report about their stay with us.

We were able to get close to the sled dogs and horses in a very special way. An absolute highlight was the wonderful evening in the hot tub surrounded by snow.
